Sense of Taste
Sense of taste detects the presence of chemical substances in the food and drinks.
The sensory organ of taste is the tongue.
Taste, also called gustation is a chemical sense which detects the taste of dissolved chemicals in the food and drinks in the mouth.
The upper surface of the tongue is covered with little pointed structures called taste buds.
Taste buds contain chemoreceptors called taste receptor cells which detect chemicals in the mouth.
Saliva dissolves food and drinks in the mouth, which stimulate the taste receptors in taste buds.
Taste receptor cells send impulse to the brain and the brain interprets (translates) the impulse and identification of the type of taste take place.
The tongue detects four basic tastes, which are;
- Bitter
- Sour
- Salty
- Sweet
Bitter receptors are located at the back of the tongue.
Salty and sour receptors are found on the sides of the tongue.
Sweet receptors are found in the front or tip of the tongue
