Sense of Smell
\
Sense of smell detects the presence of chemical substances in the air.
The sensory organ of smell is nose.
Smell, also called olfaction is a chemical sense which detects the chemicals in the air that enter the nasal cavity.
The roof of the nasal cavity is covered with chemoreceptors called olfactory receptors or smell receptors which detect chemicals in the air.
Chemical substances in the air is dissolved by the mucus in the nasal cavity which stimulate the olfactory receptors (smell receptors) to generate nerve impulse.
Olfactory Nevers carry the nerve impulse from olfactory receptors to the brain through the olfactory bulb.
The brain interprets the nerve impulse and identification of the smell takes place.
